Selection Criteria

  • Willingness to share a personal experience of exposure to a potentially traumatic event that resulted in strong reactions. Were you able to overcome/recover from the effects of the event? What did you do to resolve the reactions? 
  • Life experience: jobs, professions, or participation in organizations in the past that would provide value as a peer support member.
  • Willingness to be on call and respond to potentially traumatic events.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality…is trustworthy 
  • Caring and compassionate
  • Shall have the ability to relate to people empathetically
  • Good listener
  • Shall possess effective interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Dependable/reliable 
  • Loyal 
  • Works well with others
  • Respected by peers and colleagues
  • No current disciplinary actions or current investigations 
  • Is willing to attend/participate in current & ongoing training (4-20 hours per month) 
  • Willingness to undergo an application & selection process 
  • Willingness to participate in an oral interview 
  • Statement of support from supervisor and Battalion Chief 
  • A minimum of 1 year post-probation in AFD
