Stress in the workplace and at home is a reality for many first responders. Left unchecked it could impact your health in negative ways. Stressors have a major influence upon mood, our sense of well-being, behavior, and health. (Schneiderman, Ironson, Siegel. 2005)
Taking a few minutes each day for yourself can have a great impact on your overall health and wellbeing.
Meditation may actually help to reduce stress, improve focus, mood and even sleep.
Insight Timer is a phone app available on both apple and android devices, it’s free and has 15,000 guided meditations, 3,000 teachers as well as a timer. You can choose from a variety of meditation options including, guided, timed, sleep and music.
If you are new to meditation start with a 3 to 5 minute guided meditation and increase your time depending on what is comfortable for you. As you become more comfortable in your practice try unguided, timed meditations. It’s all about personal preference and finding what works best for you. If you’re having trouble falling asleep, the Yoga Nidra meditation for sleep is a great place to start.
The app does have the option to upgrade for a fee which gives you access to courses that help you learn about meditation and ways to apply it your everyday life.
